Solo Hang Gliding

Solo Hang Gliding is the way to go for those who are ready to change their lives. For many people, hang gliding is not just a sport, but a way of life. Once you become a pilot you will never again go anywhere without considering the potential flying.

We offer :

  • Tandem Training Course
  •
The basics of hang gliding are relatively simple. You can get your solo rating (Novice) by training for just five hours a day, for ten to fifteen days. We operate from the Flight Park in Queenstown. Our training hill is the only one in Queenstown. This set up is prefect, allowing the student pilot to progress gradually.

Novice Course Hang 2 (Full pilot license IPPI card)

After completing the beginner certification (Hang 1), if the student wishes to continue to become a fully certified novice pilot (Hang 2), able to fly without the oversight of an instructor, then they must complete the NZHGPA requirements for a Novice rating (Hang 2). The knowledge and skills required for this rating are taught in the (Hang 2) hang gliding course, which includes ground school, lessons in ground handling and a minimum of 40 flights total.

This course consists of 9 to 10 days of intensive training. Expect to devote a minimum of five hours per lesson day to complete this course, including 2.5 hours of classroom time per day. The Novice license (Hang 2) is internationally recognized.

    What to Expect:
The first morning we get used to the equipment and practice controlling the hang glider close to the ground. Expect bunny hops from a gentle slope.

Successive days consist of ground training and low level flights from launch sites suitable to the weather on the day. Expect about 30 take offs and landings, focusing initially on take off and landing skills. Once these skills are acquired we move on to higher flights.

We prefer you to do this course in a block of 9 to 10 days, as you learn much quicker this way, however if you have a problem getting the time off work you can split the course into stages. We are one of the only schools in New Zealand that will keep you in the school for as long as it takes to make you a good safe pilot.

    Theory:
Combined with the flying, elements of theory will be taught. We conduct the theory lessons in a natural environment, discussing things as they occur, on the hill or in the landing paddock. There is also a necessary element of classroom theory. If you have the opportunity we recommend some pre course reading.

    Course Cost:
Cost for course is $NZ 250- per day. This includes all equipment, instruction and transport to training and flying sites from Queenstown, Omarama and Dunedin.

    Note:
The NZHGPA now requires all course participants to become a member, this additional cost is $NZ 150.00 payable to NZHPGA before the course. We can arrange this for you.

    Allow 9 to 10 days
Price: $NZ 250- per day, extra tuition post course is $NZ 250- per day
Be aware that should the student fail to complete, or drop out of, any course the charge will be $NZ 250- per completed day of the course.
